Established in 2010, the Aalto University is a new university with centuries of experience. The Aalto University was created from the merger of three Finnish universities: The Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and The University of Art and Design Helsinki. Aalto University School of Science and Technology has been divided into four new schools starting from 1st of January 2011. The six schools of Aalto University are all leading and renowned institutions in their respective fields and in their own right.

The combination of six schools opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The new university's ambitious goal is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in its own specialized disciplines.

The research work will be carried out in two separate departments:

  • Department of Automation and Systems Technology of Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering
  • Department of Energy Technology of Aalto University School of Engineering.

The Department of Automation and Systems Technology contains five research groups:, Automation Technology, Autonomous Systems, Control Engineering, Information and Computer Systems in Automation, and the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Generic Intelligent Machines Research. The department also manages the AUT degree programme. The Department of Automation and Systems Technology conducts research at the highest international level in the areas of modeling and simulation, intelligent signal processing methods and automatic control.

The Department of Energy Technology conducts education and research both on energy production as well as on energy use by exploiting novel methods on both experimental and computational research work. Special fields of know-how are development of the combustion process in combustion engines, industrial energy applications, among others drying, process integration, research related to burning of black liquor, system optimization both in industrial processes and buildings, minimization of entropy generation in different processes and systems as well as applications related to electrical networks and trade of electricity. A common feature for research focusing on energy production and energy use is the aim towards high energy efficiency and minimization of environmental load.
