The University is a broad based University consisting of the five faculties of Arts, Engineering, Medicine, Science, and Social Sciences. The core activities of the University are undergraduate education, postgraduate education, and research. The Leonardo Centre for Tribology is a research Centre based within the Faculty of Engineering. The Centre is the largest of its kind in the UK and focuses on research and education in tribology and surface engineering. The Centre consists of 8 academic staff, 6 full time post-doctoral researches and over 70 PhD students. The research expertise spans all domains of tribology. Particularly relevant to the Hercules-2 project are the skills in the development of sensors systems for tribological contacts. This includes patents and IP in the use of ultrasound to measure oil films, contacts, and other tribological phenomena.
